However, the Global ESG Monitor shows that many ESG reports worldwide are not transparent and comprehensive enough yet.<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-33665\" src=\"https:\/\/cometis.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/no.17_en_ESG_friday_template.jpg\" alt=\"ESG\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For the Global ESG Monitor (GEM), we joined forces in an international collaboration with the research institute <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kohorten.com\/en\/home-en\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kohorten<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the Australian sustainability communications specialist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.curriecommunications.com.au\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Currie<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and the U.S. communications strategy consultancy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/xenophonstrategies.com\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Xenophon Strategies<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. We examined 140 companies from DAX, EUROSTOXX, ASX 50 and Dow Jones with regard to their sustainability reporting. The result: alarming. On average, the companies scored only 26 out of 66 points in the GEM ASSAY &#x2122; Score.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Global ESG Monitor creates comparability<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The topic of ESG has rapidly gained importance in recent years. Sustainable financial products are on the rise and are seen as one of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/press.pwc.be\/europe-in-pole-position-for-esg-transformation-but-opportunities-not-fully-leveraged#:~:text=PwC%20forecasts%20European%20ESG%20assets,15.1%25%20in%20end%2D2019.\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">biggest growth areas<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in the financial market. In addition, ESG reports are expected to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fuel <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">competition among companies for sustainable business practices <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> but globally, there is still no standardized form of reporting. This makes it difficult for investors and other stakeholders to compare the ESG performance of different companies and make well-informed decisions. It is true that most companies use frameworks such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalreporting.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">GRI (Global Reporting Initiative)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> or the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals)<\/span><\/a> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">now<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, so they cover the most important issues. However, they do so only superficially, resulting in a lack of concrete information on targets, stakeholder engagement and risks, as the Global ESG Monitor result<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> show.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The study of ESG reports thus reveals the transparency problems that many reports still have and the improvements that are still urgently needed. This should be an incentive for companies to continuously improve their own performance and to take the topic of ESG reporting more seriously than before.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Globally, the field of ESG has room for improvement<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The lack of transparency in the reports is problematic simply because it is difficult for outsiders to understand how reliable the information and data presented are and how they <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">were gathered<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Only a quarter of the companies explain the methodology behind their own ESG reporting, and only a fifth describe how the data provided was collected.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is particularly critical in the area of financially relevant ESG information identified for each industry by SASB standards. Although most companies refer to the standards, the relevant information is actually<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> only<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> included in 29 percent of the reports. This <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">shows <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that the capital market lacks the most important and interesting data to make good investment decisions.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In comparison, European companies <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">performed <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">better than the rest<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. They account for eight of the top 10 companies in our ranking. By contrast, six of the worst ten companies are <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">from <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the Dow Jones. This is where the most incomplete and non-transparent reports can be found: Out of 66 achievable points, the companies from the Dow Jones only achieved an average score of 23 points. One possible reason: In Europe, the first statutory reporting requirements for non-financial information already exist (in Germany, for example, the CSR-RUG) <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> overseas, they do not (yet).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Where is the benchmark?
